Eclectic, But Universally Elegant
The news from bridal central is eclectic but universally elegant. Ballgowns are back but definitely different from their stiff satin ancestors. Today’s Cinderella wears feathered or ruffled lace and fluid tulle often embellished with dimensional floral appliques, ribbons and even POCKETS! Imagine having kleenex and lipstick at your fingertips for the evening. Pick-ups have evolved into more gentle and asymmetrical drapes. Rouching continues to dominate bridal silhouettes because it flatters the midsection, but smooth bodices often accomplish the same body wizardry with aggressive boning and princess seaming. Look for more attention to the natural waistline this year as well as fit-to-flare gowns which hug the curves. Gowns are arriving with slightly elevated natural waists which suggest but do not quite fulfill the empire look.
A Special Thank You!
First, thank you to all the wonderful brides who made our recent sample sale such a success. Many lucky girls found dresses at up to 75% below normal prices. There are still about two dozen gowns on what will be our “permanent” sale rack.
The new gowns are arriving from our designers for fall, and we are dazzled as we unwrap the boxes and hang these confections on our racks. The common denominator for fall 2010 and 2011 is what I entitle “an elegant romance.”
Soft and delicate fabrics configured with pleats, ruffles, and petals are beginning to compete with sleek sheaths and mermaids. Texture is replacing heavy beading. The exception is the presence of dazzling embellished belts, often with chunky pearls and rhinestones. Feathered and draped tulle, emerging from natural or dropped waistlines. Witness Chelsea Clinton’s silk tulle draped Vera Wang gown accented with a jeweled belt. She wore a cathedral veil which is only one option for the “top” of the ensemble. Others include the very couture “bubble” veils, feathered birdcages, shoulder grazing fly-away styles with the smallest dash of sparkle or silk bias edge ribboning and the traditional elbow or fingertip length.
I laughed to see the first bride in our ” twosome” dress. All soft organza and pearls, this gown transformed itself into a snappy little cocktail/ dancing dress when the lower tier was removed like a magic trick. I also just loved the La Sposa gown with the lace overlay that moved like a filmy curtain over the fitted inner gown. Pattis recently sent us some amazing romantic pieces with floating blossoms and embroidered lace. I can just hear the gasps of awe they will engender as they adorn our 2011 brides. Several gowns are visions from “Swan Lake,” and others by Paloma Blanca are as fluid and clean as water. There are so many gorgeous and affordable options.
The wedding gown is no longer predictable or pedantic. It’s a “moveable feast” of beauty and style. It’s the centerpiece of the wedding, the template for the color palette, flowers, linens, tuxes, even lighting.
